The Record was established in Deep River, Iowa in 1899 and is the official weekly newspaper of Poweshiek County, City of Deep River, City of Montezuma, City of Brooklyn, City of Malcom, Montezuma Light and Power, Montezuma Water Department, Poweshiek County ISU Extension, and Poweshiek County Zoning
One year later, and a whole lot bigger!
On Sept. 1, 2024, the Bateses took ownership of The Record from longtime-owner and publisher Shirley Dunham. The Record is working hard to continue the tradition of an independent, trustworthy, and positive news source for Montezuma, Deep River, Barnes City, Brooklyn, Malcom, Guernsey, and Poweshiek County.

In the first year, circulation doubled. Our readers find our community coverage exhaustive, our information reliable, and our positive news refreshing. The Record is growing community, one page at a time!
